An 18-year-old student from Buckinghamshire in the United Kingdom has tragically died after suffering a severe allergic reaction while on a family holiday in Morocco.
Lily King had recently completed her first year studying economics at University of Exeter, and the trip was meant to celebrate that milestone. Instead, it became a devastating experience for her family when she experienced a fatal episode of Anaphylaxis.
According to information shared through a fundraising page on JustGiving, Lily had lived with multiple severe allergies since early childhood. These included allergies to fish, seafood, nuts, sesame, and dairy, among others. Managing these conditions required constant awareness and caution in everyday situations, especially when eating outside the home.
Family members explained that her allergies had become more severe over time. In the months leading up to the trip, Lily had already experienced a serious allergic reaction earlier in 2024, which required hospital treatment. The recovery process had taken a toll on her body, leaving her more vulnerable.
While dining at a restaurant in Rabat, Lily accidentally consumed a small piece of carrot. Although it may seem like a minor ingredient, even trace exposure can trigger a life-threatening reaction in individuals with severe allergies.
She responded immediately by taking an antihistamine and using her EpiPen, which is designed to counteract severe allergic reactions. Despite these efforts, her condition worsened rapidly. The reaction progressed to cardiac and respiratory arrest, and she was taken to hospital.
Lily remained under medical care for several days but sadly passed away four days later.
