Hayden Panettiere Opens Up About Disturbing Hollywood Experience From Her Teenage Years

Actress Shares Painful Memories in New Memoir

Hayden Panettiere has spoken publicly about a deeply unsettling experience she says occurred when she was just 18 years old while working in the entertainment industry.

The actress discussed the incident during an appearance on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast while promoting her memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, released on May 19.

During the interview, Panettiere described a situation involving a trusted female industry acquaintance who allegedly led her into an uncomfortable and alarming encounter aboard a yacht in the South of France.

The actress explained that the experience left her feeling trapped, shocked, and betrayed by someone she had believed was protecting her.

Panettiere began working in entertainment before her first birthday, appearing in commercials as an infant.

Over the years, she became widely recognized through film and television roles, including appearances in Remember the Titans, Ice Princess, and Bring It On: All or Nothing.

Despite her early success, the actress later endured several difficult years marked by personal struggles involving addiction and depression.

A Difficult Period Away From the Spotlight

Between approximately 2018 and 2022, Panettiere largely stepped away from public attention while privately dealing with mental health and substance abuse challenges.

Reflecting on that period during the podcast interview, she described it as a “horrible cycle” tied to addiction and emotional struggles.

While discussing her memoir, Panettiere also revealed details about an incident involving a woman she had grown close to within the industry.

According to the actress, she trusted the woman deeply and viewed her as someone who cared for and protected her.

In the memoir, the woman is referred to using the pseudonym Stella McAmis.

Panettiere explained that they had been spending time together on a yacht trip in the South of France when the incident occurred.

During dinner one evening, Stella allegedly asked her to come downstairs to meet someone.

The Incident Aboard the Yacht

According to Panettiere, she followed her friend into a private area below deck where she was brought into a small cabin room.

There, she says she encountered a well-known man waiting inside the room.

The actress alleged that her friend physically placed her into bed beside the man, who was unclothed beneath the sheets.

At the time, Panettiere says she was only 18 years old.

Although she did not publicly identify the man during the interview, readers of her memoir noticed several details that appeared to narrow down his identity.

In the book, Panettiere described him as a “famous thirty-something British singer-songwriter.”

She recalled seeing him shirtless beneath the blankets and immediately feeling alarmed by the situation.

“‘Oh my God,’ I thought. ‘Is he n*ked under there?’” she wrote.

According to the memoir, her friend then allegedly whispered, “I want you to get in bed with him,” before making a crude remark about the man’s anatomy and leaving the room.

“My Body No Longer Felt Like My Own”

Panettiere described the emotional impact of the moment in deeply personal terms.

“My body no longer felt like my own… As soon as the door clicked close, my survival instinct kicked in,” she wrote.

The actress explained that growing up in Hollywood around adults had conditioned her to ignore her instincts and comply with authority figures around her.

Even so, she quickly realized she needed to remove herself from the situation.

According to Panettiere, she immediately told the man that nothing was going to happen.

“Look … I don’t know what she said to you, but this is not going to happen,” she recalled telling him.

She then got out of bed and left the room.

Reflecting on the experience years later, Panettiere described feeling deeply betrayed by the woman she had trusted.

“I wasn’t scared, but I felt like I’d been kicked in the face. She’d confided in me, pampered me and treated me like her best friend — then turned around and treated me like a call girl,” she wrote.

She added, “I deserved better than that, by a lot!”

Realizing How Young She Truly Was

During the podcast interview, Panettiere also reflected on how immature she now realizes she was at 18, despite believing at the time that she was capable of handling adult situations.

She explained that years of growing up in the entertainment industry gave her the impression that she was more emotionally prepared than she actually was.

“The fact that I was 18, even though I’d lived such a huge life and I thought I was oh so mature at 18 … scientifically, your frontal lobes don’t develop until we’re what, 25, 26?” she said.

“So even though I felt like I could make healthy decisions, safe decisions, I wasn’t capable of being fully aware of what was going on around me.”

Panettiere emphasized that the situation caught her entirely off guard.

“There were no hints of anything like that happening, so it took me by surprise,” she explained.

Feeling Trapped at Sea

The actress also described the isolation she experienced after the incident took place.

Because the group was aboard a yacht far from shore, she said she felt trapped and unable to fully escape the people involved.

Panettiere recalled hiding in different parts of the yacht afterward to avoid crossing paths with them.

The experience left her feeling emotionally abandoned and unsupported.

“And there was nobody who was going to be empathetic to my situation. I realized that this was nothing new to them,” she shared.

Her comments painted a picture of a young woman suddenly realizing she was in an environment where behavior that deeply disturbed her appeared normalized by others around her.

Why She Chose Not to Name the People Involved

In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Panettiere explained why she decided not to publicly identify the individuals described in her memoir.

She said one reason was concern about future encounters within the entertainment industry.

“Because it was a bad look for them and [the people I didn’t name] were generally people within my industry. They’re people I could run into again. I didn’t want to put myself in that position,” she explained.

Panettiere also revealed she wanted to protect herself and her company from possible legal disputes.

“Things happened a long time ago, but it was to protect me and my company from being sued by some very p*ssed-off famous people,” she said.

Although she withheld names, the detailed descriptions included in the memoir have led many readers to speculate about the identities of those involved.

Another Troubling Encounter Described in the Memoir

Elsewhere in the book, Panettiere also described another deeply uncomfortable experience involving a different figure in the entertainment industry.

According to the actress, the incident involved a “well-respected” Oscar-winning actor and director.

She stated that the encounter took place during a small gathering at a friend’s apartment in Los Feliz when she was 19 years old.

Panettiere alleged that the man unexpectedly exposed himself to her during the gathering.

The moment reportedly left her shocked and unsettled.

By including these experiences in her memoir, the actress appears to be opening up about the pressures, manipulation, and unsafe situations she encountered while navigating Hollywood at a very young age.

Personal Loss Added to Her Struggles

In addition to discussing her experiences in the entertainment industry, Panettiere has also spoken openly about devastating personal loss.

In February 2023, her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died at the age of 28.

A statement released by the family said his death was caused by “cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), coupled with aortic valve complications.”

Jansen Panettiere was also an actor and appeared in projects including The Walking Dead, Ice Age: The Meltdown, and Blue’s Clues.

The siblings were reportedly extremely close.

Following his death, Hayden Panettiere later described the loss as life-changing and emotionally overwhelming.

She admitted the tragedy intensified her grief, anxiety, and struggles with agoraphobia.

The actress has since explained that much of her healing process and her decision to publicly share painful parts of her story were influenced by her brother’s memory.

Using Her Story as Part of Healing

Through her memoir and interviews, Panettiere has spoken candidly about addiction, emotional pain, exploitation, grief, and survival.

Her willingness to discuss experiences from both her professional and personal life marks one of the most vulnerable periods of her public career.

For years, much of her suffering remained hidden behind fame and public appearances.

Now, by sharing these memories openly, she appears focused on reclaiming control over her story and acknowledging the realities she faced behind the scenes.

Her memoir presents not only difficult experiences from her teenage years in Hollywood, but also her long struggle toward recovery, self-understanding, and emotional healing.
