The tragic death of 10-year-old Caleb Schwab remains one of the most devastating amusement park accidents in recent memory. Years after the incident, details surrounding the accident and the emotional aftermath continue to leave many people deeply shaken.
In 2016, Caleb visited Schlitterbahn Waterpark with his family, including his parents Scott and Michele Schwab and his older brother Nathan. The family had traveled to the popular waterpark during what was meant to be a fun summer outing together.
One of the park’s most famous attractions was the Verrückt water slide, which at the time was promoted as the tallest water slide in the world. Standing more than 168 feet high, the attraction drew visitors from across the country looking for an intense thrill experience.
The slide, whose name came from a German word meaning “crazy,” featured a dramatic drop followed by a steep upward section designed to launch riders over a large crest before descending again. Riders traveled in multi-person rafts while enclosed within a netted structure supported by metal poles.
According to reports from the investigation, tragedy struck when Caleb rode the slide in August 2016. Authorities later stated that the raft became airborne during the ride. Caleb reportedly struck overhead metal support structures inside the slide enclosure, resulting in fatal injuries.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic and heartbreaking. One eyewitness later told reporters that it was among the most horrifying moments they had ever experienced.
At the bottom of the slide was Caleb’s older brother Nathan, who was waiting for him after the ride. Nathan, who was only 12 years old at the time, immediately realized something had gone terribly wrong.

The Schwab family later reached settlements with some of the parties involved, though certain legal claims reportedly continued against additional contractors and consultants connected to the slide’s design and evaluation.
In public statements released afterward, representatives for the waterpark expressed sorrow over the incident and emphasized that they had never experienced a tragedy of that magnitude in the company’s history.
Officials stated that safety had always been considered a priority and noted that many employees and their own families had previously ridden the attraction.
Despite those statements, the accident sparked major public discussion about safety standards for extreme amusement rides and whether attractions pushing physical limits were being adequately evaluated before opening to the public.
In 2018, Schlitterbahn Waterpark officially closed.
