Family Shares Final Message from Passenger Who Died During Cruise Excursion
The daughter of 80-year-old Suzanne Rees has shared the final message her mother sent just hours before her death—words that now carry deep emotional weight for her family.
Suzanne Rees was traveling aboard the Coral Adventurer, operated by Coral Expeditions. The ship departed Cairns on October 24, 2025, for a planned 60-day journey around Australia, offering passengers the opportunity to explore remote and scenic coastal locations.
A Promising Start to the Journey
In the early days of the voyage, passengers visited Lizard Island, a well-known destination within the Great Barrier Reef. The stop included an organized hike, which Suzanne chose to join.
According to her daughter, Katherine, the morning of the excursion appeared entirely normal. Suzanne sent a message that reflected her anticipation and enjoyment of the trip.
“She sent me a text that morning with a photo of the deck, saying: ‘Arrived at Lizard Island, going for a hike, and then afternoon swim,’” Katherine said in an interview.
At that point, there was no indication that anything was wrong. For Suzanne and her family, the journey was expected to be a memorable and positive experience.

Illness During the Excursion
During the hike, Suzanne reportedly became unwell. Based on information shared by her family, she was advised to return down the trail on her own.
She did not make it back to the group or the ship.
At the time, her absence was not immediately recognized. Reports indicate that the vessel departed the island without realizing that she was missing. A headcount was not conducted until later, and by the time concerns were raised, the ship had already left the area.
Delayed Response Raises Concerns
Concern escalated when Suzanne did not appear for dinner later that day. Crew members began searching the ship, initially considering the possibility that she may have fallen overboard.
A search and rescue operation was then initiated, and the Coral Adventurer returned toward Lizard Island. However, the delay in identifying her absence meant that critical time had been lost.
Suzanne’s body was found the following day.

Family Response and Questions
In the aftermath, Suzanne’s family has raised concerns about how the situation was handled. Katherine described what she believes to have been a failure in basic safety procedures.
“From the little we have been told, it seems that there was a failure of care and common sense,” she said. “We understand… Mum fell ill on the hill climb. She was asked to head down, unescorted.”
She also questioned the lack of an immediate passenger count before the ship departed.
“Then the ship left, apparently without doing a passenger count… Mum died, alone,” she said.
The circumstances have left a lasting emotional impact on the family, who continue to process the events surrounding her death.
A Journey Meant to Be Special
Suzanne had reportedly paid approximately $30,000 for the cruise, which was intended to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. An experienced walker and member of a bushwalking club, she was considered active and capable for her age.
She had also undergone a medical check-up prior to the trip and was cleared to travel.
Her daughter Kate emphasized that, given the conditions, the excursion itself should have been reconsidered.
“My mum was capable. She walked all the time. And I think what should have happened—if the conditions were unacceptable—the walk should have been cancelled in the first place,” she said.
“Somebody needed to make that decision and say, ‘too hot, we’re not doing a walk.’”

Company Statement
In response to the incident, Coral Expeditions issued a statement expressing sympathy to Suzanne’s family. The company acknowledged that certain safety procedures were not properly followed on the day of the excursion.
The statement described the company as “deeply sorry” for what occurred.
Lasting Impact
For Suzanne’s family, the loss is compounded by the circumstances surrounding her final hours. While investigations and reviews may continue, the emotional focus remains on her last message—a simple note reflecting anticipation for a hike and a swim.
That message, sent without any sign of distress, has become a lasting reminder of how quickly the situation changed.
Suzanne Rees is remembered by her family not only for the tragic circumstances of her passing, but for the life she lived and the experiences she valued, including the journey she had hoped would be a highlight of her later years.
